Key fact
Hormonal methods stop eggs maturing or being released. Barriers, spermicides, abstinence and sterilisation stop sperm meeting an egg. IUDs prevent implantation or release a hormone.

Contraception and fertility
- Oral contraceptives contain hormones that inhibit FSH, so no eggs mature.
- An injection, implant or skin patch of slow-release progesterone inhibits the maturation and release of eggs.
- Condoms and diaphragms stop sperm reaching an egg; condoms also protect against STIs. Spermicides kill or disable sperm.
- IUDs prevent implantation or release a hormone. Also: abstaining when an egg may be in the oviduct; sterilisation.
