Magnetism and electromagnetism
A magnet does not have to touch anything to act on it — and only one of the things it does is proof that the other object is a magnet too. Follow that from two bars on a track to the field a current makes, and to the motor that field turns.
- 03The Earth is a magnetSystemA compass works because it is one magnet finding another one, and the other one is the planet you are standing on.Open this lesson
- 04ElectromagnetsModelA current makes a magnetic field. Wind the wire into a coil, drop a piece of iron down the middle, and you have a magnet with a switch.Open this lesson
- 05How a motor worksSystemA wire carrying a current inside a magnetic field is pushed. Arrange for the push to keep going the same way round, and you have a motor.Open this lesson
