A MAGNETIC FIELD is a region around a magnet (or current-carrying conductor) where a magnetic material experiences a force.
MAGNETIC FIELD LINES:
Shown as lines with arrows pointing from NORTH to SOUTH outside the magnet.
Inside the magnet, arrows point from south to north (completing the loop).

PLOTTING WITH A COMPASS:
1. Place bar magnet on paper.
2. Place a compass at a point near the magnet.
3. Mark the position of the NORTH END of the compass needle with a dot.
4. Move the compass so its SOUTH end is where the previous dot was.
5. Mark the new position of the north end.
6. Repeat to trace the field line.
7. Draw a smooth curve through the dots with an arrow pointing from the original position towards the current one (north to south direction outside the magnet).
PLOTTING WITH IRON FILINGS:
Scatter iron filings around the magnet on a sheet of paper.
Filing align with field lines โ reveals field pattern.
